The 2017 Hot List

#HotList

NAME: Hayley Henderson

WHO IS SHE: Executive Director of Columbus, Georgia Convention and Trade Center

HER STYLE: Long waves, long sideparted bangs

WHY WE LIKE IT: Some might call it a "Southern thing," but she clearly cares about making her hair an outstanding feature. Round-brushed curl and probably some spray are used to keep the bangs in line. The long curls may be designed to distract you from the highest-risk part of the style, anyway.

SUPER-HAIR? She's competed in three Miss Georgia contests, and the hair skill shows. But we wonder about a few Facebook photos, where bangs may have snuck under her sunglasses and into her eyes. Still, we lean toward saying she has it - or at least really, really tries. Columbus comes through again. [Photo courtesy Ledger-Enquirer; posted 12.29.17]

NAME: Hanna Mosa

WHO IS SHE: Half of the Latin singing sisters “Ha*Ash” (her sister is Ashley)

HER STYLE: Long, center-parted with bangs across the forehead

WHY WE LIKE IT: Many celebrities have impressed with this look, from Karen Carpenter to Zooey Deschanel. But it's a rare day when a blonde wears her hair this way. She apparently has for years, and it caught our attention at the Latin Grammy Awards. The bangs have good thickness, even if her forehead sometimes is exposed. And they were cut deep enough that the long hair would have a very hard time bouncing into her eyes.

SUPER-HAIR? On this night, she had it. On many days, she probably does. But at other times, not so. Even though there's one video where the bangs show impressive strength as wind blows in her face, a few pictures show wind apparently shoving long hair (admittedly with a different style) into her eyes. We lean toward saying no, but we love her approach – bringing back memories of our gold-blonde standard for this style, Jackie DeShannon. [Posted 12.15.17]

NAME: Manushi Chhillar

WHO IS SHE: Medical student in India, recently crowned Miss World 2017

HER STYLE: Medium-long sidepart with some natural wave

WHY WE LIKE IT: She was recommended through our Twitter feed without any explanation. But when she turns the wave into flips or rolls, it looks like a very strong style – one that some Hair Fans would want to un-flip. She doesn't use spray often, which adds to the excitement.

SUPER-HAIR? Her introductory video at the pageant included a hug with her mother, where the right side came within an eyelash of her eye. Flipped curl absolutely made the difference. And as long as she keeps it well prepared, her hair is pageant-perfect. This Chhillar is a thriller. [Posted 12.1.17]

NAME: Jillian Clare

WHO IS SHE: Actress/Singer/Producer/Director, perhaps best known for the departed online drama Miss Behave and the current Amazon series Ladies of the Lake

HER STYLE: Mid-length natural waves, parted slightly off-center

WHY WE LIKE IT: The Hair Fan who recommended her wrote: “Rich color and great body.” This Twitter selfie taken at sunrise shows both of them well. We're not sure if she uses any spray. But either way, she usually shows natural-looking styles that appear at high risk of collapsing.

SUPER-HAIR? A short Twitter clip from May appears to show her hair down, as she works out with a punching bag. So we give her a disappointed no. But she played the rival of Victoria Justice in a movie – and if she's in training, that's a Super-Hair War simply waiting to draw a big crowd. [Posted 11.17.17]

NAME: Daniella Rodriguez

WHO IS SHE: Miss Texas USA 2016; budding actress; woman who received a marriage proposal from Carlos Correa after the Houston Astros won the World Series (shown with engagement ring)

HER STYLE: Medium-long sidepart which can be straight or wavy (our preference)

WHY WE LIKE IT: "Great waves and body," said an email from a Hair Fan. They were sometimes hard to see during her year with the crown, as we often had bone-straight styles. But one pageant picture is on Twitter, showing her with longer wavy hair in mid-turn - both flying and holding where they mattered most.

SUPER-HAIR? The video of "the moment" hinted to us it was not. An Instagram post from May left no doubt at all, as she let the hair plop down. But she seems ready to make the transition from beauty queen to baseball "trophy wife," and we wish her well with that - even if it means hair under ballcaps. [Posted 11.3.17]

NAME: Daya (real name Grace Tandon)

WHO IS SHE: Singer who won a 2017 Grammy Award for Best Dance Recording

HER STYLE: She's apparently had several, but we noticed a photo promoting the song New with layers reaching to the bustline and loose bangs

WHY WE LIKE IT: Her right side expands and turns at just the right amount to look thick and strong. She may want you to focus on that, because her left side seems to need more teasing and inner twisting to stay in line. The bangs are, well, new for her and don't seem to be her strength.

SUPER-HAIR? The answer is as simple as her promotional video for the song New. She's out in the desert, and wind blows her hair right into her face. She may be the next Selena Gomez in terms of musical talent, but not with what we're after. [Posted 10.21.17]

NAME: Alexis Bledel

WHO IS SHE: Emmy-winning actress currently appearing on Hulu's series The Handmaid's Tale (we misspelled her name on our Emmy ballot); best known for The Gilmore Girls

HER STYLE: Currently a bit below the shoulders with gentle waves

WHY WE LIKE IT: Her “Gilmore” looks didn't thrill us, but she's impressing much more these days. The wave is daringly placed close to her right eye, yet it stays strong under TV lights – and now it must, because we believe she's grown out the bangs she had for a time.

SUPER-HAIR? Sadly, this is where we recall the “Gilmore” looks. They were flatter, and they fell with ease. But her current styles seem to be another story. Some women's hairstyles simply get better with time, and she's a good example. [Posted 9.30.17]

NAME: Pam Bondi

WHO IS SHE: Florida Attorney General

HER STYLE: Bust-line straight, parted slightly off-center; wave added on occasion

WHY WE LIKE IT: Blonde hair with any amount of length is enough to get many Hair Fans' attention. But it's certainly unexpected on an elected official. She doesn't seem to add any products to it, which adds to the drama. But she uses her shoulders as a wall of protection for the hair when necessary.

SUPER-HAIR? The more we reviewed her pictures online, the more skeptical we became. But as an attorney like her might say, we found no conclusive evidence that the hair has fallen in her eyes. She gets a positive judgment from us – but we wonder what happened when she stepped outside during Hurricane Irma. [Posted 9.15.17]

NAME: Rebecca Sheehan

WHO IS SHE: TV news anchor/reporter in St. Louis

HER STYLE: Mid-length sidepart with plenty of teasing; at its best with round-brushed curls

WHY WE LIKE IT: With apologies to a country music act this look is big and rich. Bulging curl surrounds her face with hair. But ultra-teasing should keep the right side in line, and the curl combined with some teasing can keep an extremely high-risk left side from collapsing. We suspect hairspray is a must for her.

SUPER-HAIR? Hair Fans around St. Louis will have to help us here. We found nothing to indicate her hair has fallen, which is marvelous if it's true. We think she could pass for the twin sister of Brittany Jeffers – and in the world of Super-Hair, that's a big compliment. [Posted 9.1.17]

NAME: Julianna Goldman

WHO IS SHE: CBS News Correspondent; also seen in a couple of House of Cards episodes

HER STYLE: Currently shoulder-length with waves, although it's been straighter and shorter

WHY WE LIKE IT: We think the waves make her hair more attractive, while also making it stronger. With spray probably added, this becomes a style Hair Fans might want to muss – but find it very difficult to do.

SUPER-HAIR? It's been close to her eyes a few times, but never down from what we can tell. So she's as good as, uh, gold.[Posted 8.18.17]

NAME: Bethany Mota

WHO IS SHE: Fashion/beauty video blogger; author of Make Your Mind Up

HER STYLE: Medium-long with a part that seems adjustable; waves added on occasion

WHY WE LIKE IT: We learned about her by seeing her book, and the waves looked inviting and attractive. We were led to think she takes good care in keeping the hair in line, with waves controlling the overall look to assure that.

SUPER-HAIR? Alas, we checked her Twitter feed. Without the waves, straight hair seems to blow across her face with ease. So to borrow from her book, sometimes she's “Mota-vated” to have perfect hair – but sometimes not. In a battle of YouTube millennial hair, we think Chelsea Krost beats her most days of the week. [Posted 8.7.17]

NAME: Gaelle Baumann

WHO IS SHE: Professional poker player from France

HER STYLE: Medium-long and usually loose; tends to adjust the look between hands during tournaments

WHY WE LIKE IT: When she's in action, this hair isn't going anywhere. You might try to stare her (and it) down during hands, but she won't budge unless you eliminate her. And given her success record – almost making a final table at the World Series of Poker's Main Event a few years ago – that can be hard to do. We suspect her usually-stunning hair easily distracts other players, helping her cause.

SUPER-HAIR? You might think someone this cool and calculating would be as careful with her hair as with her chips – but not always. A couple of posed photos for a French online poker site show a few strands across her right eye. Yet with Vanessa Rousso stepping away from the table, this may be the best style for poker-playing Hair Fans to bet on. [Posted 7.21.17]

NAME: Laryssa Bonacquisti

WHO IS SHE: College student and journalist; model; crowned Miss Louisiana 2017 (supporters on Twitter would note she was Miss Shreveport, but the competition site says she's really from Baton Rouge)

HER STYLE: Long with adjustable waves; our photo from KTBS-TV shows fully-rolled curls with teasing around the crown

WHY WE LIKE IT: To borrow from a magazine which showed a similar look years ago, this is at its best a “lion's mane” of hair. Teasing (and, we suspect, some spray) clears the face. Then the hair is brought forward for “extra fullness” - a style in which Hair Fans could get lost for days, and not complain at all.

SUPER-HAIR? OK, we admit - it's not always this fully-loaded. But she's kept straighter and flatter styles out of her eyes as well, even though she's had a close call or two. So she gets a big YES from us – and if she adds a headband to our photo, we would declare her Wonder Woman and try to take her on. She'd win, of course, but the battle would be quite a thrill.[Posted 7.7.17]

NAME: Hillary Vaughn

WHO IS SHE: Fox Business/Fox News correspondent based in Los Angeles

HER STYLE: Medium-long, parted a bit off-center with varying wave

WHY WE LIKE IT:I love her wavy, shiny and thick blonde hair,” a Hair Fan wrote to us. “Occasionally blew with a smooth wind to make her more charming and charismatic.” We admittedly never put those descriptions with “wind” before when it comes to hair, but we suspect she found the right combination of lightness and hold to spray her left side into place for outdoor tests. Yet she can tuck the hair back behind her ear in challenging situations.

SUPER-HAIR? She's relatively new on the air and pictures of her are sparse, so we'll award her the benefit of the doubt and say yes. But we wonder – would her strong style be “more charming” if she was caught in a crosswind? [Posted 6.23.17]

NAME: Elisabetta Pellini

WHO IS SHE: Actress/model/writer born in Switzerland, based in Italy

HER STYLE: She's shown several, but our photo displays the look that stopped us cold – long loose waves with bangs.

WHY WE LIKE IT: When the hair comes in front of her shoulders, a lot of thickness is on display. Her hair looks hard to move or muss. But if it does, the bangs are cut deeply enough so they provide a warning to her for making adjustments.

SUPER-HAIR? We sadly must say no. She's a model, after all, and some photo shoots show her hair fan or wind-tossed into an eye. We wish more women would say no to that. But if we saw this style in public, we'd watch it carefully for as long as possible. [Posted 6.10.17]

NAME: Christine Pellegrino

WHO IS SHE: Long-time elementary school teacher, newly elected to the New York State Assembly

HER STYLE: Shoulder-length with bangs and flipped curls

WHY WE LIKE IT: There's something here for all kinds of Hair Fans to like. At their best, the bangs cover the forehead with pretty good thickness. But the strongest point here seems to be the flips; they keep long hair from dropping into the eyes, and can avoid drooping for a lengthy time even when pressured by wind. Together, they form a two-pronged defense system to prevent collapse.

SUPER-HAIR? Her hair wore down quite a bit at times during the special election, especially when she was outside in the breeze. But like her campaign, this style refuses to lose. Nothing in the eyes gets an “aye” vote from us. Supporters call her a “fighter”, and her hair seems able to fight off any challenge. [Posted 5.26.17]

NAME: Britt Robertson

WHO IS SHE: Actress currently appearing in the Netflix series Girlboss

HER STYLE: Medium-long with a light natural wave and bangs across the forehead

WHY WE LIKE IT: We were drawn to the bangs first. When they fill the forehead, we wonder how strong and thick they really are. To help answer that, we're led to the long hair on either side of the face. When they're prepared for business, her style is full – yet it's set close to the eyes with confidence, because the bangs allow freedom of movement that she otherwise might not have.

SUPER-HAIR? The series shows all of her character's life – and away from business, her styles sometimes look troubled, and even worn-down. At those moments, she makes moves that put hair in her eyes. So our answer is no. But this series provides a great opportunity to study a great haircut in many different conditions and phases. May women focus on developing the “boss” best, and find ways to avoid the worst. [Posted 5.12.17]

NAME: Briga Heelan

WHO IS SHE: Actress currently appearing in the TV comedy Great News

HER STYLE: Medium-short sidepart, with teasing to lift hair at the crown; shorter and less wavy than when she competed in Super-Hair Wars at the start of 2014

WHY WE LIKE IT:Great body, subtle waves,” explained the Hair Fan who suggested her. We also think there's spray on her right side to keep the teased section in place – but this looks like a style that might flex a little during turns, but not much. She's shown more voluminous styles, but our picture is taken from the TV show's website and may be designed for her role in an office.

SUPER-HAIR? She's not afraid to place her hair at the brink when she's on a red carpet. And sadly, we found one image from TNT's 25th anniversary celebration where it drooped an inch too far – covering her left eye. “Great news” for some, but not quite for us. [Posted 4.29.17]

NAME: Michelle Galvan

WHO IS SHE: New co-host of Univision's Primer Impacto; former news anchor in Houston

HER STYLE: Shoulder-length or a bit longer, almost center-parted; we think at its best when waves/curls are added

WHY WE LIKE IT: High-risk, yet strong and stunning. The hair can bounce a little, but otherwise it holds solidly wherever she puts it. She think she trimmed a few inches as she moved from Houston to Miami, and her looks are better for it.

SUPER-HAIR? From what we've seen, it is – and in a way, it has to be. Univision brought her in to replace Barbara Bermudo, whose long locks are so famous that she had her own line of products. The network doubtless had hair in mind when making this hire. So far, so very good. [Posted 4.14.17]

NAME: Kanza Feris

WHO IS SHE: Canadian “actor/writer/producer” (to quote her Twitter account); appearances include I Wish You Love and Anomie

HER STYLE: Medium-long sidepart, straight most of the time

WHY WE LIKE IT:Amazing body and thickness,” wrote a Hair Fan who found her pictures. From the pictures we've seen, she plays those qualities up as assets. She lets it blow free, surround her face, have a “static” moment – and almost invites people to come up and play with it themselves.

SUPER-HAIR? Trouble is, she sometimes plays with it too much. The pictures on social media include a few where her thick mane gets in her eyes. If it wasn't for those, our “Feris wheel” would be spinning out of control. [Posted 3/31/17]

NAME: Mikaela Hoover

WHO IS SHE: Actress in movies such as Guardians of the Galaxy; guest on TV series such as Happy Endings, 2 Broke Girls and the pilot Omega Models

HER STYLE: We were pointed to a picture which seems to be a few years old, with long layers, an off-center part and occasional added curl; current look is shoulder-length

WHY WE LIKE IT: The Hair Fan who recommended her said, “Hair looks silky and full with rich color.” But what strikes us most in this photo are her layers. The shortest looks feather-perfect around the eyes, perhaps given extra attention for hold. The longer layers are loose and playful-looking.

SUPER-HAIR? Sorry. We were directed to an IMDB photo collection with those great layers – but it also includes a picture where she pushes the hair into her right eye. If she needs extra money between movie roles, we suggest setting up a booth and offering Hair Fans pushing rights. [Posted 3/17/17]

NAME: Joanna Natasegara

WHO IS SHE: Movie producer based in London; Academy Award winner for the short-subject documentary The White Helmets

HER STYLE: Medium-long straight sidepart, tucked behind ears as she accepted the award

WHY WE LIKE IT: Her hair is sleek, yet she takes steps to make it look strong. Beyond the ears, the hair is long enough to stay securely behind a shoulder. She's used straight and sideswept bangs in the past, which arguably look even better on her.

SUPER-HAIR? We lean toward saying no, as she's had other red-carpet styles with strips of hair practically in her left eye. But we didn't want to overlook this Oscar-winner whose hair impressed us on stage. If our “best in show” ballot had six or seven names instead of five, she probably would have been there – which is saying something for someone normally behind the camera. [Posted 3/3/17]

NAME: Marci Gonzalez

WHO IS SHE: ABC News correspondent

HER STYLE: Slightly past shoulder-length, sideparted with teasing and curl at the ends

WHY WE LIKE IT: She's shown for years that she knows how to keep her hair under control when out in the elements. Combed-over teasing and spraying at the top helps with that, while the curls probably can guard against flyaways.

SUPER-HAIR? Sadly, no. The curls seemed to be lacking when she covered the Charleston, South Carolina church shootings, and a gust of wind blew hair into her face. But those moments seem to be rare, and there's a lot to like most of the time. [Posted 2/17/17]

NAME: Iris Mittenaere

WHO IS SHE: Dental student in Paris; newly-crowned Miss Universe 2016 (even though the pageant was early in 2017)

HER STYLE: Medium-long, parted slightly off-center; frequently straight with waves added for pageant nights

WHY WE LIKE IT: She appears to be careful with control at all times. A bit of teasing around the “crown” on the night she won allowed the hair to flex and have motion without cracking. And since she won the pageant crown, she's shown regular use of the ears and shoulders to keep straight hair out of danger.

SUPER-HAIR? She certainly knows how to turn up the volume of her hair for public occasions. It's evident on her personal Twitter feed. But you'll also find a few photos there where strands seems to linger in an eye – and one video from early December where a strip dangled down in front of children. So we sadly conclude her hair is superbe, but not quite super.[Posted 2/3/17]

NAME: Casey Burke

WHO IS SHE: Teenage singer/actress, currently playing a love interest on The Middle

HER STYLE: Long with a slight natural wave, carefully protected in her TV role by a hat that appears borrowed from the French Foreign Legion

WHY WE LIKE IT: Her hair on TV is perfect, attractive and seemingly well-calculated. The ear flap on the hat might fly up when the wind blows, yet the hair doesn't move. And that's the fun mystery about her. Imagine being “Brick,” the awkward young boyfriend. Wouldn't you want to know what happened if you reached for that hat? Would the hair have Super-Hold if fully exposed? This is how young Hair Fans get their start.

SUPER-HAIR? At the risk of revealing a spoiler, she does go hat-free off-camera. And from what we've seen, she can keep the hair in line even in active scenes. So yes, we consider her a rising hair star. Now c'mon Brick – go for it. What could happen?! [Posted 1/20/17]

NAME: Angela Morabito

WHO IS SHE: Executive with “Stand United” political petition site; writer for Red Alert Politics and the Outset Network

HER STYLE: Shoulder-length sidepart, with flips on the critical right side and at the tips

WHY WE LIKE IT: Professional-looking and often precisely-prepared. The picture on her Twitter feed shows she's not afraid to place her hair very close to her eyes, yet curl and spray keep it strong. She can use the ear for support if necessary, but that seems to happen rarely – and she might have well-hidden bangs; she's displayed them openly in recent years.

SUPER-HAIR? She passed every online check we did, so we think so. But she can be hard to track, because she makes political panel appearances on channels like RT (where we found her) on a haphazard basis. Yet someone who inspired a fake Twitter feed while she was in college at Georgetown must have something going well. [Posted 1/6/17]
