Project 20/10
Super-Hair marked its tenth anniversary in December 2009. And to celebrate, we conducted a modern version of our Ultimate 50 -- counting down what we considered the 20 most outstanding hairstyles of our first decade.
Our list was based on a number of factors, ranging from popularity with Hair Fans and success on our site to personal passion and perfection. This list is bound to be controversial -- but we think that makes it fun!
1. Bonnie Bernstein
The sports reporter's hair resume is nothing short of extraordinary: 23 Crown Awards out of 27 nominations, a 27-1 record in head-to-head matchups, the 2002 Super-Hair Wars title, Cup of the Americas titles in 2003 and 2007. So it's no wonder she was the first inductee in the Hair Fan's Hall of Fame in 2003. "Bonniephile" fans notwithstanding, she prides herself on keeping hair flawless in public -- and she almost always does.
2. Kelly Tilghman
She won the 2003 Crown Award for Newcomer of the Year, in a year when she set a record with five nominations. Then she went on to Golf Channel stardom and 74 months on the Top Ten Tresses list. Hair Fans voted her #1 in the world (including ties) three times.
3. Susan McGinnis
Short styles worn loosely yet precisely impressed Hair Fans during her years at CBS News. She was second in Crown Award nominations with 12, won five of them (including the first four awards for Best Bangs) -- and she spent a solid year in the Top Ten Tresses list.
4. Alexandra Steele
The Weather Channel meteorologist has proven loose-looking feathery hair didn't have to perish with Farrah Fawcett. "Super-Steele" kept her styles perfect enough to last more than four years on the Top Ten Tresses list, spending at least two stints at #1 in the world -- and she won a Crown Award in the weather field in 2006.
5. Carrie Underwood
The most successful winner of American Idol has shown the most successful Super-styles in music. She won five Crown Awards out of nine nominations, and led five of eight Cutting-Edge Hair News polls for the top hair at awards shows.
6. Faith Hill
Years of experimenting with blonde hair haven't stopped this singer from receiving ten Crown Award nominations, with four wins in 2000-01. She reached the Super-Hair Wars finals in 2000, and entered the Hair Fan's Hall of Fame in 2007.
7. Martina McBride
It may be hard to believe that this country singer won the first Crown Award for Best Short Hair. But she did, then grew her style back out to strong acclaim. She took another Crown for Best Hairstyle in Music in 2008, and led several Cutting-Edge Hair News polls for the top style at awards shows.
8. Samantha Harris
The co-host of everything from Dancing With the Stars to entertainment news programs has taken long thick waves to two Crown Awards, and a couple of "steals" from the red carpet for best hair at awards shows. She's also had two stints on the Top Ten Tresses list.
9. Angie Everhart
An actress and model admired by some Hair Fans simply for being a redhead. She won the Crown Award in that category three years in a row, entered the Hair Fan's Hall of Fame in the third year of 2007, and captured Super-Hair World Cup II for the U.S. in 2006 with a dramatic final-round win in overtime.
10. Heather Tesch
Platinum-blonde and high-risk, yet practically flawless with short hair, this Weather Channel meteorologist entered the Hair Fan's Hall of Fame in 2007. She also won four Crown Awards out of seven nominations, and became a Super-Hair Wars undefeated champion.
11. Victoria Warren
A Boston TV news reporter caught fire with Hair Fans in 2008, after cutting shoulder-length hair to a tight bob. She won three Crown Awards, including one as Super-Hair Wars Champion Hairstyle of the Year. And "Queen Victoria" made history as the first woman to defeat Bonnie Bernstein in a head-to-head showdown.
12. Norah O'Donnell
The NBC Washington correspondent is a master of short sidepart pageboys - parted on either side, with beautiful hold whether dangerously loose or helmet-hard. She spent 27 months in Top Ten Tresses, received four Crown Award nominations, and inspired our first Hair Watch in 2003 with undefeated results.
13. Amanda Coetzer
A retired tennis player dubbed South Africa's "Little Assassin" has blonde hair that's extremely hard to stop. She earned her country the first AAA Cup in 2005, then reached the World Cup II semifinals in 2006 and the AAA semifinals in 2009.
14. Debra Messing
Adjustable natural curls and a starring role on Will and Grace have made this actress a favorite. She won six Crown Awards (five for Best Curls) and entered the Hair Fan's Hall of Fame in 2003.
15. Shania Twain
The Canadian country singer gained admirers with her loose long locks. She ranked second in career Crown Award wins with seven, and received a record 14,324 votes to enter the Hair Fan's Hall of Fame in 2005.
16. Kiran Chetry
A cable news morning anchor with undefeated (and seemingly immovable) medium-short hair won two Crown Awards in 2004, while reaching the Super-Hair Wars semifinals. She's also competed strongly for her native Nepal in international tournaments.
17. Halle Berry
The first minority woman to win a Crown Award, she won in both 2003 and 2004. She also gained first and second-place honors for best hairstyle at the Academy Awards, with two very different looks.
18. Judy Fortin
The top style in our Ultimate 50 has remained unbeaten throughout the decade, although her appearances on the CNN networks diminished. A four-year run in Top Ten Tresses included one Cutting-Edge Hair News poll where she tied for #1 in the world.
19. Stephanie (Woods) Dhue
A reporter with public television's Nightly Business Report possesses a pageboy that Washington's wind and humidity seemingly cannot wear down. She spent more than five years in Top Ten Tresses (voted as high as fourth in annual rankings), and was perfect in a four-month Hair Watch.
20. Norah Jones
Long, thick, naturally wavy hair as dreamy as her jazzy music. She spent 22 months in the Top Ten Tresses list and received four Crown Award nominations.
