Super-Hair.Net - EuroCup 2008
It's Greek to us!
It's a tough name for many people to spell, much less pronounce - Aikaterini Evangelinou. And perhaps her hair is every bit as tough: long waves flowing from some protective lifting around the crown. This model and Miss World contestant dominated a 16-nation field, to make Greece the champion of EuroCup 2008!
Evangelinou was so dominant that not even a similar-looking style from Belgium could head her off. She won the Championship final over Halima Chehaima by a 76-percent margin. In fact, Greece's closest matches in the tournament ended with more than a three-to-one margin in her favor! Not bad for a country which had never appeared on this site in any way before.
The woman who came closest to beating Evangelinou had no trouble winning the Consolation Final. Jurgita Jurkute (dubbed "the Baltic beauty" by one voter) embarrassed Scotland's Nieve Jennings with a 94-percent rout. The overall top seed in the playoffs winds up with no automatic spot in World Cup III.
After weeks of open nominations, a live drawing for EuroCup groups was held 13 April. After a week of national qualifying matches, six weeks of group play turned out this way....
RED GROUP
GREECE: AIKATERINI EVANGELINOU.
A model who represented her country at the 2007 Miss World pageant overwhelmed a field which included an Ultimate 50 member.
Greece 15 points, Netherlands (Melissa Sneekes) 10, Italy (Cecilia Bartoli) 5, Montenegro (Snezana Buskovic) 0.
BLUE GROUP
BELGIUM: HALIMA CHEHAIMA.
Another Miss World contestant survived perhaps our most competitive group ever. She advanced ahead of Europe's only Crown Award winner, based on a head-to-head tiebreaker.
Belgium 10 points, Russia (Aleksandra Ivanovskaya) 10, England (Anthea Turner) 3, Bulgaria (Gergana Kochanova) 1.
GREEN GROUP
SCOTLAND: NIEVE JENNINGS.
The 2007 Miss Scotland had little difficulty, defeating both countries which clashed in the 2004 EuroCup finals. But despite two shutout wins, the top seed from group play fell sharply at playoff time.
Scotland 15 points, Albania (Soni Malaj) 7, France (Marion Cotillard) 2, Romania (Alice Bennethum) 0.
ORANGE GROUP
LITHUANIA: JURGITA JURKUTE.
The Miss World pageant must love great hair, because she was an entry there in 2007 as well.
Lithuania 12 points, Spain (Penelope Cruz) 8, Ireland (Blathnaid McKenna) 4, Latvia (Linda Leen) 0.
